The Effects Of Alcohol On College Drinking Prevention Website

Introduction Alcohol is one of the most addictive drugs in the United States and the most prevalently used among college students. A mixture of stress that comes from school and sometimes work sometimes encourages college students to use this drug as a source of alleviation. This negative situation causes many cases of death, sexual assault, injury, unsafe sex, and academic failure. The overconsumption of alcohol is a major issue that can only be resolved through proper teaching of the harmful effects of alcohol and the proper way to handle stress. Discussion In the article posted on the college drinking prevention website, it stated that 1,825 students end up dying from alcohol-related injuries in the United States and 599,000 are injured but survive. These numbers are significantly high, but nevertheless can be reduced. Another cause of alcohol related deaths is the simple fact that college students do not take what happens to them seriously when being overly induced with alcohol. The article states that many find it amusing to see a peer passed out drunk. This, however, is not an amusing situation because being so drunk to the point of passing out can be detrimental and could potentially end that person’s life from alcohol poisoning. Alcohol poisoning occurs whenever aspiration of vomit leads to asphyxiation, otherwise known as the poisoning of the respiratory center in the brain. Asphyxiation can lead to death if not given medical attention immediately. Persona and Tone free essay sample

A mother and wife should not be graded by those who have no experience with the job. In â€Å"Marks† by Linda Pastan, a woman’s thoughts on just that are revealed. The speaker in the poem is a woman who is also a mother and a wife. The woman is commenting on the level of appreciation that her family bestows upon her. She seems to be getting good grades, but as the son says â€Å"if/ I put my mind to it/ I could improve† (6-8). The poem has a playful tone†¦ until the last two lines; â€Å"Wait ‘til they learn/ I’m dropping out† (11-12).This serious shift in tone reveals that the woman does not appreciate being given â€Å"Marks† on her performance as a wife and mother. Although she is receiving good grades; who are they to grade her? The last line alone provides a second reading of the poem with a wholly sharp but still playfully sarcastic tone as opposed to the initial lone playfulness. What happens after â€Å"Happily ever after? † This is what Ron Koertge is supposing in his poem â€Å"Cinderella’s Diary. † Koertge takes on the persona of the well known Disney character, Cinderella. The speaker, presumably Cinderella herself, of the poem is reading from a post fairytale Cinderella’s diary. The fairytale has ended and the boredom of real life has set in, thus there is a heavily jaded tone throughout.Cinderella has actually written â€Å"I miss my stepmother† in her hypothetical diary; everyone remembers the evil stepmother (1). The overly happy and cheerful things that were so pleasant in the Disney original are now mind numbingly unbearable; â€Å"Those insufferable birds† (13). The poem is filled with irony. What should be happily ever is not happy at all. It is down right boring. The tone of the diary excerpt clearly indicates Cinderella’s longing for her previous, albeit insignificant, life with her stepmother and stepsisters. Happiness is not indicated by ones wealth or social standing.
